Selective Service Registration Requirement for Citizenship

To meet Selective Service Registration or Military Service Requirements for naturalization, one of the following conditions must apply:

  • You are a female
  • You are a male and
     
    • You are registered with the Selective Service,
    • You did not enter the United States until you were over 26 years of age,
    • You were in the United States between the ages of 18 and 26, but you were in a nonimmigrant status, or
    • You were in the United States between the ages of 18 and 26, but you were not required to register with Selective Service and you submit a Status Information Letter from the Selective Service, which would explain the situation.

If you served in the U.S. armed forces, you must not have deserted and you must not have obtained an exemption or discharge on the basis that you are an alien.  If you are a “conscientious objector” (i.e., if you object to military service on the basis of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion), you must be willing and ready to perform non-military service.
